LUCKY 7 ART DONATION:

Proceeds from Lucky 7: the 7th Annual Benefit Art Auction and Party on June 13th support our year-round exhibition, residency, education, public art, and publication activities.

We will be creating a beautiful fully illustrated catalog of the auction artwork highlighting the donating artists. The catalog will be distributed in print to attendees. Donating artists attend our fun event, including the afterparty, for free, as our humble thanks to you. There will be drinks, fun, live jazz, and free door prize ticket for every attendee, and this year some of the prizes are really fancy, including some getaway travel.

New for 2015 is a sliding scale, wherein artists can decide whether to donate 50%, 70%, or 100% of the proceeds from their auction artwork.

Your support through artwork donation makes it possible for us to rally our community for this one, single, wonderful night which powers another entire YEAR of programming, resources, ideas and opportunities, for all kinds of people. Your support matters. There are many, many things from 2014-2015 I am proud of, too many to list here as we expand and grow, but I can try:

-The people I see, including families with small children, teenagers, and folks working late night shifts, stopping and spending serious time looking at the public art in our storefronts at 75, 77 and 85 Market Street.

-Our numerous, varied collaborative partnerships, with organizations both larger and smaller than us, including a big 2015-2016 project with the Rutgers Institute for Ethnicity, Culture and the Modern Experience, and the many groups we host like People’s Open Mic and Liberation Arts.

-The way our building is never still anymore. Artists can still find solitude here if they want it, but there’s always something going on. There’s a density to the activity now. As more than a gallery, we are, incubator, instigator, cheerleader, connector, conduit….

Over the past 11 years, Gallery Aferro has received 4 consecutive Citations of Excellence from the NJ state arts council for our ambitious annual roster of 12-15 exhibitions, with connected artist talks, performances, panels, workshops, and screenings, a year-round artist residency program with nearly 100 alumni, educational offerings including arts intensives and school tours, a public art initiatives, and a publication line of artist books, exhibition catalogs, essays, and a sound art CD, which plays in our permanent installation, Elevator Music, a decommissioned refurbished vintage passenger elevator.

The expansion project is exciting because it is a grassroots effort on a grand scale, and our groundlevel, centrally located spaces are genuinely accessible. Spaces designated for community use as part of
the project mean that we can learn about what people want and need rather than thinking we have all the answers. We can’t wait to see what Gallery Aferro will look like when it’s been 22 rather than 11 years!

Thank you again for your consideration. – Gallery Aferro

Volunteer Opportunities: Immediate Openings

We are currently in need of volunteers for some general labor projects for throughout 2015 as we upgrade several parts of the gallery. Volunteers can help us move items, clean, paint and build. Skills with basic tools and light carpentry (drywall), wiring, etc… greatly appreciated but not necessary to make a big difference.

Gallery Aferro is also seeking volunteers to assist with gallery reception and light clerical assistance. These volunteers will answer the phone, assist visitors with questions and attend to the exhibitions during gallery hours.
