Gallery Aferro, Newark, NJ, USA
http://www.aferro.org & http://www.activatemarketstreet.org

The Main Gallery at Gallery Aferro is a large space that gives exhibitors access to an engaged and diverse community. Part of building community is collaborating with motivated cultural contributors. We like working with people that have vision and our space lends itself to the realization of that vision. The artwork on display should be as engaging, exciting, and diverse as the community. ACTIVATE: Market Street exhibition spaces are large and can be seen 24/7 by the public walking down Market Street. This gives a special opportunity to exhibit bright and eye catching work.

Applicants are encouraged to stop by the gallery during gallery hours to look at the space. Feel free to email us with questions or other information you may need from us.

Proposals may be for exhibitions that have been mounted previously/will travel, but please keep in mind that content seen recently in the Newark, NJ area does not offer our audience new experiences.

The curator is expected to be at the gallery throughout the full week of installation and the curator and artists involved in the exhibition are responsible for installation of the artwork. Elevator Music 2: Aferro Publication No. 24
Deadline for Open Call: 3/15/2015 @ 5pm
Vintage Elevator Installation @ Gallery Aferro 2nd Floor

Musicians and artists working with sound are invited to submit MP3’s under 10 minutes in length to be played on loop in a lovingly refurbished, decommissioned vintage elevator, a permanent installation in Gallery Aferro and archived on CD as Aferro Publication No. 24.  Submissions may take the form of original musical songs, spoken word or other forms of poetry, field recordings, experimental music, sound art, oral histories, or none of the above.

Some history of the project, to date:

Gallery Aferro has been operating out of a circa 1880’s former furniture store in downtown Newark since 2006. Though primarily a visual arts gallery, Aferro is commited to promoting all forms of artistic expression. Elevator Music I, Aferro Publication No. 17, juried by artist Adam Trowbridge, was intended for permanent loop in our freight elevator. Shortly afterwards, as part of some routine building maintenance, Gallery Aferro staff discovered a second elevator in the building, a very early (single digit) Otis passenger elevator. The elevator was extricated piece by piece from behind the false wall where it had been entombed and has been refurbished and reinstalled as a permanent installation in our galleries.

Some possible thematic points of departure (or arrival), by no means required:

Passenger and Freight, The Elevator Paradox, Monotony, Functionality, Accidents. Ascension and Descent. Rising or falling, and of course, Gravity. The idea of the prelude, an interval, a non-moment not worthy of record or remembrance. The elevator may provide a brief space to prepare privately for a more public moment. Silence, except for noise related to weather or machinery. Temperature fluctuations in the shaft, a space connected to the outdoors and the interior of the building. The Intuitionist. Speculative Fiction. Buried or forgotten objects or histories. Nostalgia. Steampunk.

How To Submit

Submit via email to: submit@aferro.org

Subject line: “Last Name, First Name – Elevator Music”
(Example: Smith, Jane – Elevator Music)
* Please send submissions as attachments (i.e. .doc, .pdf, etc)

Every submission\proposal must include:

2) Artist Statement
3) Brief statement about the specific work you propose to be part of the publication.
4) 1 – 5 mp3s via email, dropbox, etc
5) $10 USD fee per submission, via paypal here. If you truly cannot afford this fee please contact Evonne Davis for a waiver at

Elevator Music 2: Performative or Installation Proposals
Deadline for Open Call: 3/15/2015 @ 5pm
Vintage Elevator Installation @ Gallery Aferro 2nd Floor

Musicians, poets, artists and performers are invited to submit proposals for public presentation usage of a lovingly refurbished, decommissioned vintage elevator on permanent installation at Gallery Aferro. The elevator is 45” deep, 53” wide, 83.5” tall, and has been repainted with historically appropriate green color scheme inclusive of the original deco motifs in gold and yellow. There is lighting and a working scissor gate. All of the original brass controls have been restored. It has been appraised by an elevator expert as being a very early Otis model based on single digit model number, and dates from Newark’s era of ornate retail environments.

The scale and siting of the elevator means that proposals could be for intimate audiences of as few as 1-3 people at a time, or for amplified performances shared with a larger audience via livestreaming, projections, or other means. Proposals may incorporate usage of our main gallery, located one floor down from the elevator site. The elevator space is dynamic, small, and intimate. It lends itself to innovative and experimental types of performance or presenting and we are open to any type of content within the space.

All the submission fees from these proposals will be used exclusively to support Gallery Aferro’s Community Based Recording Studio as part of our expansion.
