Gallery Aferro is currently looking to hire a new Gallery Manager starting early summer 2018. This position is part time with additional hours when necessary.

Job Description:

Gallery Aferro’s Gallery Manager plays an integral role in the small team of staff members that make up the organization. Having a broad range of responsibilities, the Gallery Manager’s role is not only smooth function of day-to-day operations but also in the conceptualizing of programmatic goals and structure. The Gallery Manager in many ways is the face and voice of the gallery to the majority of the guests who visit the space. This position is as much about the finer details of administrative infrastructures as it is about being welcoming and hospitable to the diverse community the gallery serves. Although the Gallery Manager has many solo responsibilities, collaboration is crucial to success in this position. A strong sense of purpose, focus, diligence and tenacity are integral to this role. Proficiency with WordPress, Adobe software (Photoshop and InDesign), Google Docs, & Excel is very important. Knowhow surrounding digital photography and organizing digital assets/media is extremely helpful. Basic hand tool and power tool skills are necessary.

Responsibilities Include:

Manage Exhibition programming including coordinating with artists and curators, creating and issuing consignment agreements, creating exhibition card, takeaways, and price list for internal & promotional use, and organizing all related paperwork and materials to each exhibition. This includes managing a collaborative production schedule for each exhibition. Additionally, the Gallery Manager is in charge of overseeing all artwork handling and installations as well as coordinating with the artist(s) and curator concerning artwork pick ups, deinstall, and deliveries. Occasional driving of Gallery van required.

Additionally to the exhibition programming is managing gallery events like openings, open studios, closings, etc. This includes all aspects of the event, each typically rather unique to the particular exhibition or program.

Maintaining proper office and gallery functionality. Includes scheduling appointments and updating the gallery Google Calendar, ensuring all materials needed for proper work flow are available, properly turning on all lights and exhibition elements, as well as turning off all exhibition elements at the end of the day and securing the building. Office responsibilities also include managing hardware like sound equipment, projectors and other video hardware, external hard drives, etc. additional office responsibilities include checking voicemail, distributing messages, greeting guests, and updating Annual Attendance spreadsheets.

Coordinating and managing all aspects of internship program, from outreach to follow up, interviews, projects, and scheduling. It is the Gallery Manager’s responsibility to assign interns to staff members or specific projects and to follow up with their progress.

Managing all website materials on aferro.org, activatemarketstreet.org, and aferrostudios.org

The Gallery Manager is responsible for administrative support to the Gallery Aferro Studio Residency. This includes maintaining an up-to-date filing of all resident agreements, proper resident access to the studio blog, orienting all key holders, etc.

Manage Open Calls from start to finish including originating calls, organizing information into a shareable pdf, managing responses, scheduling interviews, assessing applicants, and ultimately helping in selections when appropriate.

The Gallery Manager has traditionally also played a key role in managing the Annual Gallery Aferro Benefit Fundraiser. The primary responsibility is managing art handling and wrapping at point of sale but extends to helping secure donating artists, working with volunteers, managing proper operations during the event, and any other aspect where the Gallery Manager’s specific knowledge can be helpful. The fundraiser is a holistically collaborative event.

The ideal candidate will have skills and knowledge in the following areas:

Photoshop
Indesign
Digital Photography and Printing
Filemaker Pro
Microsoft Excel
Will have a valid drivers license
Will have basic website design and maintenance skills
Will be comfortable with installation and set up of AV and sound equipment
Will have a passion for learning and working with diverse people
Be able to lift 50 pounds and feels comfortable on ladders and with common power and hand tools
Has excellent phone and email manners
Has leadership skills
