Open Call: Curatorial Proposals
Deadline: 6/20/2017 @ 11:59pm EST

Main Gallery, Gallery Aferro, Newark, NJ, USA
www.aferro.org

Gallery Aferro offers a range of exhibition spaces and opportunities for curators and artists. Aferro’s primary exhibition space is our main gallery on the first floor at 73 Market Street. The main gallery is a very large display area on the first floor that lends itself to large group shows, comprehensive solo-exhibitions/retrospectives, etc and requires a high level of detail and quality. The gallery is approximately 1805 square feet with an 11 foot high ceiling. Please understand that proposals for the main gallery should be large in scale and will require a great deal of scheduling and planning. Proposals submitted to this open call will be for an exhibition in Spring 2018.

We are especially interested in projects that engage in idea sharing and community building. Proposals should be as engaging, exciting, and diverse as the community to which Gallery Aferro belongs to and cultivates. Gallery Aferro is dedicated to diversity in all it’s forms and believes that representation matters. Only those proposals including artists from different backgrounds, differing abilities, and across the whole spectrum of humanity will be considered. Proposals should appeal to a broad audience while also being innovative and exciting.

Proposals may be for exhibitions that have been mounted previously but keep in mind that content seen recently in the Newark, NJ area does not offer our audience new experiences. The curator is expected to be in the area of the gallery as to be as hands-on as possible though they are not required to live or be based out of the greater NJ/NYC area. The curator is to make arrangements with the artists prior to the installation week in regards to receiving artwork. Gallery Aferro will not transport any work to or from the gallery without previous notification and proper planning well ahead of time. Please inform artists of this with invitation to exhibit and do not offer transportation without planning with Gallery Aferro staff extensively. The curator and artists involved in the exhibition are to be responsible and present for the full length of installation and deinstallation of the exhibition.

In January 2017, Gallery Aferro, in cooperation with several cultural and historical institutions including George Washington’s Mt. Vernon Estate Museum, received donations of various sized museum quality cabinets, vitrines, platforms, and pedestals, and are now offering them to be activated in an exhibition to be held during Newark Open Doors 2017. The exhibition, “Case Studies”, is open to work activating the cases directly, and/or referencing cases, containers, cabinetry, and displays. Artists can outfit cases for any type of display, including new media and digital art, as well as written word. Gallery Aferro will select cabinets for artists per proposals. Open Call: Elevator Music 4
Aferro Publication No. 27
Deadline: 6/20/2017 @ 11:59pm EST

Gallery Aferro

www.aferro.org

Permanent Vintage Elevator Installation on Gallery Aferro 2nd Floor

Musicians, performers, and artists working with sound are invited to submit curatorial proposals for a “sound art mixtape“ of sorts to be played on loop in a lovingly refurbished, decommissioned vintage elevator, a permanent installation in Gallery Aferro. Submissions may take the form of original musical songs, spoken word or other forms of poetry, field recordings, experimental music, sound art, oral histories, or none of the above. If you have proper rights to the recording and it can be played on a media player or iPod, then it can be submitted. The selected proposal will be made into a CD, published by Gallery Aferro as Aferro Publication No. 27. Elevator Music 4 will be played on rotation during gallery hours from September 23rd, 2017 to mid-September, 2018

Some history of the project, to date: Gallery Aferro has been operating out of a circa 1880’s former furniture store in downtown Newark since 2006. Elevator Music I, Aferro Publication No. 17, juried by artist Adam Trowbridge, was intended for permanent loop in our freight elevator. Later, as part of some routine building maintenance, Aferro staff discovered a 2nd elevator in the building, a very early (single digit) Otis passenger elevator. The elevator was extricated from behind the false wall where it had been entombed and has been refurbished and reinstalled as a permanent installation. There have been 2 curated mixtapes for the elevator that include a series of tracks related to the idea of “elevator music” curated by Spencer Frohwirth and a series of tracks curated by Dahlia Elsayed entitled Studio/Sounds which are a diary of the sounds of artists studios from around the world.

Some possible thematic points of departure (or arrival), but by no means required: Passenger and Freight, The Elevator Paradox, Monotony, Functionality, Accidents. Ascension and Descent. Rising or falling, and of course, Gravity. The idea of the prelude, an interval, a non-moment not worthy of record or remembrance. The elevator may provide a brief space to prepare privately for a more public moment. Silence, except for noise related to weather or machinery. Temperature fluctuations in the shaft, a space connected to the outdoors and the interior of the building. The Intuitionist. Speculative Fiction. Buried or forgotten objects or histories. Nostalgia.
