Gallery Aferro is a street-level storefront art gallery and artist studio space located at 73 Market St. in the heart of downtown Newark, NJ. The building is wheelchair accessible and follows the ADA-recommended guidelines to assist visitors with concerns regarding mobility, hearing impairment, and visual impairment whenever possible.

If you need special assistance, have specific requests, or desire additional information about accessibility, please email our ADA Coordinator, Candace Nicholson, at cnicholson@aferro.org.

We believe art is absolutely for everyone and are very happy to accommodate your needs; however, please give us at least one (1) week’s notice for any unique arrangements that you may require to be made at the gallery in order to make your visit as comfortable and welcoming as possible. And if you need or prefer large-print press materials, please let us know 48 hours in advance of your arrival date and time.

Directions

Gallery Aferro is located within walking distance of Newark Penn Station, where it is also easily accessible via the NJTransit Light Rail system and the NJTransit city bus system. Conveniently nestled in the middle of the Market Street city block between University Avenue and Washington Street, the building lies within a short distance of Essex County College, the Halsey Street corridor, and the Four Corners landmark intersection.

There is a bus stop right outside our front door, along with two (2) bike racks nearby for securing your bicycles safely. Contact info@aferro.org or call 1-973-353-9533 for more detailed directions.

Parking

Street parking is regularly available around the area, but can be difficult to navigate for first-time visitors to the gallery.

You are welcome to park on the street in front of our building at 73 Market Street, on either side of the road that isn’t designated as a bus stop waiting area. You may also park on the cross streets, University Ave. and Washington St., or on any of the side streets nearby. However, be aware that University Avenue and Washington Street are one-way streets.

If you arrive within the standard business hours of 8am to 6pm, be prepared to pay for parking with either pocket change (quarters only) to pay the meter directly or download the ParkMobile app so you can pay the meter via a debit or credit card from your smartphone.

Outside of Ferry Street in the Ironbound and the Halsey Street downtown corridor, Newark does not have any parking meters that accept cards directly, only change. (We know what you’re thinking. We hate it too.)

Note: Parking in the front of the building turns into a bus-only lane on weekdays starting at 4pm, so if you park on Market Street, you are urged to move your car before 3:59pmThis is not an exaggeration. The tow trucks are typically ready and waiting to tow cars from the bus lane at exactly 4:01pm. The bus lane restriction ends at 6pm.

All parking after 6pm is free.

Parking garages and lots are located nearby, however they are very expensive (approx. $13 to $22 per hour any time between 8am and 5pm). Downtown Newark is much more amenable to those who use public transportation or taxi/rideshare services.

If you have any questions about parking availability or special issues, contact info@aferro.org or call 1-973-353-9533.
